Over the past 17+ years, a lot of our customers have asked us about the quality of one brand over another and also about the quality and price of one particular style over another made by the same manufacturer. It appears that since the Internet exploded in the 1990s, customers have become increasingly savvy about finding low prices, but also increasingly confused about the quality they're getting since there are so many product choices.

The Internet is a wonderful thing but it is not able to provide the kind of first-hand knowledge people usually want when they buy something that costs hundreds of dollars. This is because most online-only retailers have never even seen the product they're selling—they take orders based on pictures and numbers. Also, many do not provide warranty service, so be sure to ask what happens if there is a problem. Keep in mind that the person you buy furniture from will forever be your advocate with the manufacturer.

It may be helpful to think of buying furniture like buying a car. Test drive it first since photos can be deceiving. And although you may love the $10k price of the low-end model, consider how important the bells and whistles—and quality materials—are that may be standard in the $20k, $40k or even $60k models.

In furniture as in cars, the reality is that information is king AND you usually get what you pay for. For example, dense cushions that will last for years are going to cost more than thin ones you'll hate in a week. Period. Therefore, it is important to know what many brands won't tell you: that the products they sell primarily through big-box discount stores and online-only outlets are often their cheapest in price and quality, and because they're often mass produced overseas, they're not available in different colors or with any optional features.
